How to Choose the Best Lawn Mower for Your Needs

When it comes to purchasing any type of lawn mower, one of the first things you should consider is your mowing and lawn care needs. The second consideration is, of course, the price. If you’re environmentally conscious, your third consideration will be choosing a model that gets the job done without harming the environment. However, if you have a big yard, it may be hard to find an eco-friendly model that can handle the job.

Gas powered push mowers, like the Husqvarna [LINK] and the Poulan [LINK] are great for those people who have small areas to mow or need some light push mowing. The Poulan is better suited for very small lawn care needs.
Since these are gas powered they are not considered to be eco-friendly. If you live in California you will need to make sure you are purchasing a CARB compliant product.

For those who don’t want to bother with having to add gas and oil every time they mow or winterizing a gas powered engine each year, you may want to consider an electric model. These are generally best used on very small yards unless you have plenty of extension cord to reach the edges of your yard.

We chose to review a Greenworks model [LINK] and a Black & Decker model. [LINK]. If you are energy and environmentally conscious, you may want to invest in an electric model. Not only that, it will save you from having to buy gas and oil several times each summer.

Or, if learning to mow while attached to a cord is not up your alley, believe it or not you can purchase a cordless lawn mower that simply needs to be recharged. We reviewed two of those along with our electric models.

Cordless model drawbacks –I didn’t want to have to keep batteries alive (some require charge/discharge cycles all winter) or buy new batteries.

For the best eco-friendly models you can buy a completely manual lawn mower. These units have no motor at all, you simply push them around and the rotating blades cut the grass. These models are probably best suited for people who are in good physical shape and can handle the extra work from pushing these around.
We covered 3 of these products in our review on manual reel mowers. [LINK]

Riding mowers are the best product if you have a large yard and can’t quite find the energy to walk around with a push mower any more. However, these are generally pretty pricey, but you should be able to find one in your price range that suits your needs. Even though this can be a big investment, if you have a lot of mowing to do, a riding lawn mower will save you a lot of time and give you years of use.

We reviewed two models to help you make an informed decision when buying. You can view those at [LINK].
